My Philosophies: Game Edition
On this page you'll find the various ideas and principles I believe in when it comes to playing and designing game mechanics and elements. Most of these are mostly relevant to designing or running TTRPG style games, but there are some that are more broadly applicable.
Flavor is Free
If you like the mechanics of something but not the flavor… change it.
Metagaming is Everywhere
It’s just as much metagaming to pretend you don’t know how to stop a Troll’s regeneration when you do as it is to act upon that knowledge.
Metagaming isn't Inherently Bad
When the party gets together and stays together because you know you’re the PCs… that’s metagaming, and without it most campaigns wouldn’t make it out of the first session.
"It's what my character would do"
Making decisions and taking actions in accordance with your character's established beliefs and behaviors is great, it's the whole essence of Roleplaying. Your character doesn’t actually exist independently of you though. If they’re acting like an asshole, especially to other PCs, it’s because you’re deliberately choosing to have them be an asshole. Don’t be an asshole.
