My Philosophies: Game Edition
On this page you'll find the various ideas and principles I believe in when it comes to playing and designing game mechanics and elements. Most of these are mostly relevant to designing or running TTRPG style games, but there are some that are more broadly applicable.
Prioritize How Things Feel
It feels different to swing a +3 sword against a monster with 18 AC than a normal mundane sword against a monster with 15 AC, even if the scenarios are mathematically identical. I'm sure you've also seen a meme or two about what a 97% success chance means in XCOM.
Let the Players Feel Powerful
For most, D&D is Heroic Fantasy, so let the players have characters that feel heroic and powerful.
Don't Overstress About Balance...
RPGs are not competitive games; it’s alright if something is “overpowered.”
...Within Reason
Massive power differentials can often lead to conflict at the table. It’s important to be proactive about ensuring each player is satisfied with how their character is performing.
